Everything you need to know about feeding a pre-school child
In order to make the transition from infant to toddler feeding, the weaning process must be carried out.
Having completed the fifth month, in which the child starts to sit up, the first thing we try to give is homogenised fruit in the afternoon as a snack.
Soup is introduced in place of a milk-based meal, using cereal flours: with one or two tablespoons starting with rice or tapioca maize flour, more inert, plus a teaspoon of olive oil, and a teaspoon of Parmesan cheese. To this I can add freeze-dried meat, first the most inert ones i.e. rabbit, lamb, and afterwards in succession, veal, beef.
After twenty days, the cream of rice/maize tapioca is replaced by semolina which contains gluten and iron, in fact wheat is the cereal that contains the most iron.
Introducing gluten too late again puts the child at greater risk of coeliac disease.
The intake of animal proteins should also be about three to four times a week, as well as vegetables and pulses. This is defined as conventional weaning.
With weaning the intestinal flora changes a lot: with the fibres I have a more and more important mass, the discharges change, they are no longer golden yellow but brown/green and I discharge less during the day. Drinks are allowed but not sugary ones because sugar causes intestinal blockage which can cause colic.
There is also self-weaning, a completely different condition, a current of thought that is very popular today, in which the child is placed at the table with the adults and starts to taste the things that the adult eats.
After weaning, the child can start to eat everything the adult eats, according to his preferences and with a diet adapted to his needs.
It is important to use high-quality products for the healthy growth of your child.
Conclusions
This brings us to the end of our article, in which we have taken a close look at the issue of feeding your child from newborn to pre-school age.
As you can well understand, this aspect is of fundamental importance for a child’s health, precisely because it is only by respecting the standards that it is possible to understand whether it is in good health. Body weight is an indicator of the correct functioning of the whole body, so taking care of your child’s diet can help you to understand this.
One of the greatest risks in western society is that the child, especially a child in the first year of life, is overfed, that is, that he or she has too much nutrition, which leads to an early increase in fat mass, for example, which develops and which is then difficult to recover, and this should be avoided at all costs, precisely because this phenomenon can only be negative for the child’s health.
If you are not particularly knowledgeable in this area and would like to find out more, then our last piece of advice is to visit a nutritionist specialising in paediatrics, so as to create a dietary plan that can be functional for the child’s growth without any type of health problem.
We would like to thank you for reading our article up to this point and hope that it has been helpful in understanding more about your child’s diet so that you can avoid feeding your child too much or too little without causing serious health problems!
